Week in Review: Enterprise 3.0, Social Media, Internet of Things, Mobile and Big Data

This week saw a number of conferences and announcements that underscore the continuing influence of the five technologies driving enterprise 3.0. Here are some of the highlights:

Social Media: Facebook debuted real-time bidding for ads in a service called Facebook Exchange. This approach will deliver ads to users based on their Internet browsing patterns.

Internet of Things: This week’s Connected World Conference debuted the latest in M2M technology, including more powerful mobile and remote services tech and new application-development platforms. The conference also recognized innovation in connected devices through the Connected World Value Chain awards. ThingWorx won Gold in the Remote Services category along with its partner Sysmex, a manufacturer of medical diagnostic systems.

Mobile: At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple further blurred the line between desktop and mobile device, as its new desktop operating system adopts features of the iPad and iPhone.

Cloud computing and big data: At this week’s Cloud Expo in New York, one topic of conversation was the cloud’s potential to help companies monetize their big data. Erin Harrison of TMCNet recapped IBM’s Anjul Bhambhri’s presentation, which noted that cloud-based analytics can cut business insight costs in half and collaborative business processes can accelerate employee productivity by 25 percent.
