A Look Ahead: Microsoft, Amazon, Apple Gear Up for New Phone, Tablet Announcements

Now that you’re back from Labor Day weekend, brace yourself for two weeks of major tech announcements:
- Microsoft and Nokia lead off with a press conference on the new Windows phone on Sept. 5.
- Also on Sept. 5, Motorola Mobility and Verizon will hold a joint event at which the companies are rumored to announce a phone with a 720p HD screen.
- The next day, Sept. 6, Amazon will hold a press conference that many believe will reveal the Kindle Fire 2.
- These phones and tablets are preempting the Apple event that is expected to occur on Sept. 12, which many speculate will mark the debut of the iPhone 5 and an iPad mini, while other reports speculate a smaller version of the iPad will be announced and released in October.
It’s no secret that mobile technology is driving the next great technological evolution. Clearly the opportunity for startups has arrived. Startups should not think incrementally about this advantage. Early-and growth-stage companies that are smart enough to truly understand and embrace this trend by building their applications for mobile devices from the ground up have the chance to dislodge legacy vendors and capture huge markets.

- Sept. 9-13: MediaMath will attend iMedia Brand Summit, a conference it co-sponsored, in Coronado, Calif.
- Sept. 11: Safeguard Scientifics will present at the Rodman & Renshaw Annual Global Investment Conference in New York City. Listen LIVE via webcast at 1:35 p.m. EDT.
- Sept. 13: NovaSom will sit in on the Diagnose & Treat OSA: Dinner Education Event for Primary Care Physicians in Philadelphia.
- Sept. 13: Safeguard Scientifics will present at G9: ThinkEquity’s 9th Annual Growth Conference in New York City. Listen LIVE via webcast at 4 p.m. EDT.
- Sept. 10-15: ThingWorx will attend the IMTS 2012 Conference in Chicago.
- Sept. 13-15: NovaSom will be in attendance at the New England Polysomnographic Society (NEPS) Conference in Danvers, Mass.
